Varicose veins are enlarged and twisted rope-like veins that appear near the surface of the skin. They are most commonly found in the legs and ankles. In normally functioning veins, tiny one-way valves open as blood flows toward the heart and close to prevent blood from flowing backward. When these valves malfunction, blood pools in the veins, resulting in a buildup that weakens their walls , causing them to bulge. Over time, the increased pressure can cause additional valves to fail. Varicose veins and spider veins appear most commonly between the ages of 30 and 70. Factors such as heredity, gender, pregnancy, and age increase the tendency for varicose veins.

The procedure utilizes laser energy to achieve proven results without the discomfort and lengthy recovery experienced with the surgical option of ligation and vein stripping. The procedure can be completed in approximately one hour utilizing a local anesthetic and is not painful, although you might feel an unusual sensation. You will be encouraged to walk immediately after the procedure and resume normal activity the same day. Over the counter non-aspirin pain relievers will effectively treat any temporary soreness you may experience in the first few days after the procedure.

Immediately following the procedure, the appearance of the abnormal vein is improved. Temporary swelling and bruising will subside and result in a significant difference in the appearance. Published clinical studies show that the procedure has more than a 95% success rate with excellent long term results. Veins that have been treated are very unlikely to become varicose again.
